According to one definition of the typology of folly, a garden building without a defined function, its role is primarily decorative. The historical examples of follies in the 18th century helped create picturesque narratives of parks evoking remote periods and exotic places such as Antiquity or China, and sometimes, in the spirit of Romanticism, they were designed to look like ruins.  ‘Decorative’ is not necessarily a pejorative term – follies went through a modern revival in the 1980s, when they were an opportunity for radical experimenting, as a pure ‘enjoyment of architecture’ or a subversion motivated by fashionable deconstructive theories.
